Haru ichiban 春一番
“Haru ichiban” is what Japanese people call the first strong southern wind after “Rissyun” (the next day of “Setsubun” usually Feb 3, 4 or 5) and before “Shunbun” (the spring equinox). The National Meteorological Agency announces “Haru ichiban” when a low pressure front develops along the Japan Sea coast and winds blow at a speed of more than 8 meters per second bringing a higher temperature than the previous day. The experesion “Haru ichiban” was originally used only among fishermen but it has now become a household word. This year, “Haru ichiban” occurred on Feb. 20, at many locations throughout Japan.
We realize spring is on its way when we hear news of “Haru ichiban” and it makes us optimistic. At the same time, we realize that hay fever season is also just around the corner!
