Higan 彼岸
“Higan” are Buddhist holiday periods, which take place seven days before and after the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes. “Higan” means the other world.
Buddhists believe that a Pure Land Paradise exists in the west. On Equinox days, the sun rises due east and sets in due west, where they are at the closest point to the Pure Land Paradise.
Therefore, many Japanese people visit temples or graves and pray for ancestors during that period. Spring Higan in 2021 was from March 17 to 23.
