Kiyotsu-kyo 清津峡

Kiyotsu-kyo, located in Tokamachi-city in Niigata is a recommended destination in summer. Kiyotsu-kyo is designated as one of the most scenic gorges in any Japanese national park.

Connected columns of rock, lush greenery and the emerald green water of the Kikyotsu river make the gorge uniquely beautiful. People can enjoy breathtaking scenery at several view points while walking through a tunnel, which was built to protect visitors from rolling stones and the weather.

The tunnel was renovated by Ma Yansong, a Chinese Architect as his artistic contribution, “Tunnel of Light” in the Echigo Tsumari Art Trienniale in 2018. Now, you can appreciate a wonderland atmosphere which combines nature beauty and contemporary art in the cool, dark tunnel. Visitors may be required to make reservations in advance at peak times and for the sake of social distancing.
