Nashi is a Japanese pear and it is one of our most popular autumn fruits. Nashi are grown in many places in Japan. Niigata is ranked in the top 10 prefectures for the cultivation of pears. Japanese or Asian pears are round, crisp and very juicy. But, their aroma and flavor are mild in comparison with western pears. Many kinds of pears are grown and harvest time depends on the variety.
High season for nashi is from the end of August to September, but certain varieties can be found from July to November.
Western pears are only grown in colder regions in Japan and Niigata is one of them. The Western pear, “Le Lectier” is harvested from mid-October to November and are then kept for about one month until they are ripe. “Le Lectier” have started to be sold in markets in late November to December.
