Rice Terraces in Hoshi-toge (Sept 7, 2022)

Rice Terraces are small rice paddies cut into slopes like steps.  They were once a common sight in mountainous regions in Japan but nowadays they are becoming rare because the manpower needed to maintain them makes production inefficient .

I visited the rice terraces in Hoshi-toge in Matsudai at the end of August. The rice terraces in Hoshi-toge are known as one of the most beautiful areas of its kind in Japan. It is called “a quintessential scene of Japan” and has attracted many photographers. Their beautiful, nostalgic photos then attract sightseers. The rice terraces in Hoshi-toge have been reborn as a valuable tourist attraction. An observation deck for visitors, a photography deck for photographers, and even an accommodation facility have appeared. It is good to know that this nostalgic view still remains precious to so many.
